We have started adding to our inventory, a selection of UN-2 Shift Knobs, these are made to fit an non-threaded shifter rod. The size is outside diameter of the opening is 5/8", and can be reduced to 9/16",1/2", or 3/8".

We’ve just celebrated our 1st year anniversary of our new shift knob web store. Since then we’ve been asked similar questions over and over. Many of our customers seem to have the same questions:

How do I know what size thread reducer I need?
I have a non-threaded shifter rod, but I want to get a new shift knob that has threads, what can I do?
I have an automatic shifter, do you have an adapter?
I have a Lokar shifter, do you have an adapter so I can change my shift knob?
I have a 3/8”x 16 tpi shift knob, but my shifter rod is ½” x 20 tpi – Do you have an adapter?

Some of these questions we could answer, and some we could not. Especially the last one. I have not yet come across an adapter to make the shift knob threads smaller if the master is not 16mm.
Here are a few things we can help you with:

We sell an Automatic Adapter with polished aluminum finish that fits the following autos:
68-81 Firebird and Pontiac and 73-81 Chevy Camaro
66 and 67 GTO & LeMans
68-82 Chevy Corvette
You can buy this adapter for these cars and pick any of our shift knobs that have a threaded 16mm x 1.5 Masters – This includes a huge selection of knobs.

We sell a Non-Threaded Shifter Adapter that converts your threaded shift knob to a non-threaded shifter shaft, and can be used with many of our shift knobs with a 16mm x 1.50 master insert. We have a huge selection of shift knobs for you to choose from. This is a highly polished aluminum and included a Universal Thread Kit consisting of 3 Nylon Sleeves 5/8 outside diameter with inside diameters of 9/16”, ½”, and 3/8”.

We have a Lokar, LoDapt Adapter - This adapts all our 16mm x 1.50 master inserted shift knobs, or any of our solid resin knobs that can be drilled out, to fit on Lokar Shifter Shafts that have a 3/8-16 or 3/8-24 threads. It comes in a highly polished aluminum finish, and is a couple of inches long. Looks really stunning!

We also have a Custom Billet Extension Adapter , for that finishing touch to your shift knob & interior. It can be used with any of our shift knobs with a 16mm x 1.50 threaded master, or any of our solid resin knobs that can be drilled out. It has a highly polished aluminum finish, and is about 2” high. The threaded reducer kits can be purchased separately through us. This looks beautiful!

For those shifters that have no threads, and you want to install one of our shift knobs, you can buy a UN-2 KIT, which includes 3 Nylon Sleeves in sizes: 9/16”, ½” & 3/8” with an outside diameter of 5/8” that slips over your shifter shaft and tightens to the shaft with 3 set screws. This fits into our shift knobs that are threaded or un-threaded.

Introducing our new shift knob line from Kaval: We have Ghost Rider, Hellbent, Deadline v2 and Fallout. These are all handcrafted from fine pewter.

These shift knobs are cast in fine pewter then polished to a high shine. They each have a master 16mm X 1.50 aluminum insert that can be fitted with different size adapters included with your purchase, unless you need a special order reducer, then they are available at an additional cost of $5.00 each.
The Shift Knobs are approximately 2 1/4 inches tall, approximately 2 1/4 inches wide, and 3 1/2 long. Weighing approximately 11-12 ounces and built very strong, so they can be used on a daily driver vehicle.

How To Determine Your Shift Knob Thread Size

Many of our customers at HotRodShiftKnob are confused about how to determine the correct thread size for their shifters, therefore leave them bamboozled about which size to order with their shift knob. Here is a brief explanation of how to figure this thing out.

Measure the diameter of your shifter rod.
Measure down 1" from the top of the shifter rod, and count the number of threads. If you do not have 1" worth of threads, then just measure down 1/2" and multiply by two.
For example, 5/16-18 would have a 5/16 diameter shifter rod, and 18 threads per inch.

Thread Pattern Sizes for Shifters

Many of you don't really understand the whole issue of thread sizes, for when you want to change your shift knob. After all we all get bored with the same thing over and over again. Just imagine how many times a week we grab those sticks to shift our gears. We touch it, look at it, and use it day in , and day out, so why not make it fun.

The next few blogs are going to be try to tell you how to read your thread pattern for your shifter. There are so many different brands out there, some are much nore popular than other. It seems to be that 3/8-16 is the standard size for many, although there are many kinds.

At Hot Rod Shift Knob, we have starting to carry much more of a selection of sizes, especially for the masters 16mm x 1.50. They are priced at $2.00 per size, or can be picked up in a variety of sizes, whether standard or metric. We sell out pretty quickly.
